Friday Night skate Amsterdam June 6th 2003 |
|
This edition of the Amsterdam Friday Night Skate was a
special "Luilak" celebration.
Luilak, on the Saturday before Whit Sunday (50 days after
Easter), means "lazybones". Young people rouse their neighbors by generating all
kinds of noise starting by banging pots and pans, yelling and whistling early in the
morning. People who fail to get up and join the noisemakers are called Luilak. Part of the
tradition is making drawings on (car) windows using blocks of soap. (hard to remove if you
are in a hurry).
This edition about 35 skaters from the Frankfurt Tuesday
Night Skate joined the FNS. Making a lot of noice, we skated through the city. The start
as ussual in the Vondelpark (east-side near the Film museum) at 8:30. The FNS doen't get
police assistance, but instead volunteers called Blockers and Sweepers safe guard the
skaters. In case of injuries, the Flying Nurses will help out.
Marc, had designed a touristic itinerary for our German
friends. Our first stop was on the roof top of Nemo, a technologie museum. To get there
you have to climb/skate a huge stair case. From there we went down town accross Nieuwmarkt
along the canals and narrow alleys. Unfortunatly for skaters there are a lot of cobble
stones in this area. Our second stop was at Beursplein (our Wallstreet). |
