Holland, IJsselmeer and Afsluitdijk skate, June
7th 2003 On Saturday
it was an early rise, because the bus left the Vondelpark at 10:00 am to bring us to
Hoorn, in North Holland. From Hoorn we skated on the 24km long winding dike to Enkhuizen.
Overlooking the beautiful Dutch landscape of farms and small villages on our left, and on
our right the refreshing sight of cool water and sailing ships.
In Enkhuizen we had a short break, refilling our water
bottles and eating bananas. Enkhuizen is an ancient town full of cobble stones, giving us
a free foot massage ;-). After "suffering" this inconvenience, the reward is
very smooth asphalt on the dike to the next village: Medemblik.
In Medemblik coble stones again. This time we took a longer
break to have a decent lunch. From here the bus brought us to the beginning of the
Afsluitdijk. This is a 30km long dike that separates the IJsselmeer from the sea. Here we
could burn down our last energy reserve by going full speed. Wilma did an attempt to
outrace us by using a skate wing, but alas, the dike took away a lot of the wind and she
gave up.
After a total of 80km skating we drove back to Amsterdam
fully satisfied :-)
